How to get documents attested from UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs

UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attestation verifies the authenticity of the official signatures and seals on a document so that it can proceed through the required official-use process in the UAE or abroad.

The current MOFA attestation process is mainly handled online. For documents issued in the UAE, the Ministry’s system determines whether the application can use Digital Attestation or must be completed through an approved courier service provider.

When Is MOFA Attestation Required?

MOFA attestation may be required when an official document needs to be accepted by a government authority, employer, educational institution, court, embassy or another organisation in the UAE or abroad.

Common examples include:

• educational certificates for employment or further study;
• marriage and birth certificates for family or immigration procedures;
• medical and personal-status documents;
• powers of attorney and other legal documents;
• company and commercial documents; and
• documents issued in the UAE that will be used overseas.

MOFA attestation does not automatically mean that a document will be accepted for every possible purpose. The receiving authority may have additional requirements relating to translation, embassy legalisation, qualification recognition or supporting documents.

How to Get Documents Attested by MOFA UAE

The current process depends first on where the document was issued.

Documents Issued in the UAE

For a UAE-issued document, the standard MOFA process is:

1. Sign in to the MOFA service using UAE Pass.
2. Select Attestation Services in the UAE.
3. Confirm that the document was issued in the UAE.
4. Select the issuing authority and document type.
5. MOFA automatically determines whether the document qualifies for Digital Attestation or must use the approved courier route.
6. Complete the application, declaration and payment requirements.
7. Receive the completed digital document electronically or the physical document through the selected courier.

You cannot normally choose the attestation route yourself. The MOFA system determines the appropriate method from the issuing authority and document type entered in the application.

Documents Issued Outside the UAE

For a document issued outside the UAE, the process starts through the relevant UAE Mission abroad.

Applicants select Attestation through UAE Missions Abroad and follow the process applicable to the country where the document was issued. Some UAE missions provide an electronic service, while others may require an in-person procedure.

Foreign-issued documents may also need prior authentication from the competent authorities in the country of issue before they can complete the UAE attestation process.

Do You Need a MOFA Appointment for Document Attestation?

For the standard MOFA attestation process inside the UAE, a branch appointment is generally no longer the normal starting point.

The current MOFA service is available online through UAE Pass. Once the application details are entered, eligible documents are processed digitally or routed through an approved courier service provider.

This means users should not follow older instructions telling them to book a MOFA branch appointment, arrive before an appointment time or take a service-centre token for a standard UAE document-attestation application.

If a document was issued outside the UAE, however, the applicable UAE Mission abroad may have its own electronic or in-person procedure.

Do You Need to Visit a MOFA Attestation Building?

Not usually for the standard current process inside the UAE.

Eligible digital documents can be submitted and received entirely online. Documents assigned to the courier route are collected and returned through an approved courier service provider.

A physical visit may still become relevant in a different diplomatic or mission-specific process, particularly outside the UAE, but users should follow the instructions generated for their particular application rather than visiting a MOFA location automatically.

Digital Attestation vs Courier Attestation

The route is selected automatically by MOFA based on the document entered in the application.

What Documents Are Required for MOFA Attestation?

The requirements differ between digital and courier-based applications.

For Digital Attestation

The document must generally:

• be an original digital document issued in the UAE;
• come from a currently supported issuing authority;
• be a supported document type;
• contain a verification mechanism such as a QR code, barcode, electronic link or reference number; and
• be clear, complete and unaltered.

MOFA’s application system displays the issuing authorities and document types currently eligible for the digital route.

For Courier-Based Attestation

MOFA currently requires:

• the original document in Arabic or English, or accompanied by a legally certified translation;
• prior certification or attestation by the competent authority where applicable; and
• a document that has not been laminated.

Other requirements may apply depending on the document type, issuing country and intended use.

Can Every Document Be Digitally Attested?

No. Digital Attestation is currently limited to eligible digital documents issued by supported UAE government authorities.

The document must have an electronic verification feature and fall within the document types supported by the system at the time of application.

If the document is not eligible for Digital Attestation, the MOFA system may route it to the approved courier process instead.

How Much Does MOFA Attestation Cost in the UAE?

MOFA currently publishes the following standard attestation fees:

Commercial contracts can sometimes be treated as more than one document depending on their contents. Additional charges may also apply for courier delivery, embassy or mission attestation, certified translation or professional assistance.

The exact amount payable is shown before payment based on the documents and attestation option selected in the application.

How Long Does MOFA Attestation Take?

The current published processing times are:

• Digital Attestation: within 2 hours during official working hours.
• Approved courier service: approximately 1–3 business days, depending on the selected courier and delivery location.

The online attestation service itself is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Processing can take longer where an earlier authentication is missing, a foreign document requires another attestation stage, the submitted details are incorrect or the document does not meet the eligibility requirements.

What Happens After MOFA Attestation?

Once the attestation is completed, the document can proceed to the authority or organisation for which the attestation was required.

For Digital Attestation, the completed document can be received electronically through the MOFA service. For courier-based applications, the attested original is returned through the selected provider.

Further steps may still be required. For example, a destination country may require another embassy or consular procedure, while a UAE authority may require certified Arabic translation or other supporting documents.

What If MOFA Attestation Is Rejected?

An application can be rejected if the document cannot be verified, the application details are incorrect, an earlier authentication is missing or the document does not meet the requirements of the selected process.

MOFA Attestation vs Notarisation

MOFA attestation and notarisation are different procedures.

Notarisation generally concerns matters such as verifying identity, signatures or execution of a document through the applicable notarial process.

MOFA attestation verifies the authenticity of official signatures and seals appearing on documents submitted through the attestation process.

Depending on the document, notarisation or another authentication step may need to take place before MOFA attestation.
